Why Do Our Nails Break?
Why Do Our Nails Break?

Causes of Nail Breakage

Nails can break for many reasons. Frequent contact with water is a common culprit, but nutritional deficiencies and certain illnesses are also significant factors. A lack of biotin, iron, zinc, and magnesium are frequent causes. Diets low in protein can also lead to nail breakage.

Among environmental factors, contact with water and detergents, as well as the use of acetone and nail polish, can make nails more fragile. Thyroid disorders—particularly hypothyroidism—can cause nails to thin and break. Fungal infections can make nails thick and prone to breaking. Psoriasis or eczema can also deform the surface of the nails.

Prevention Tips

  • Consume foods rich in biotin, iron, and protein.
  • Moisturize your nails.
  • Protect your nails from harsh chemicals (wear gloves when washing dishes, reduce acetone use).
  • Avoid keeping nails too long and file them regularly.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
